Mediterranean Courtyard Garden
This project transformed a plain outdoor space into a warm Mediterranean-inspired retreat, drawing inspiration from traditional Greek tavernas and island courtyards. Featuring terracotta tones, natural stonework, olive trees, handcrafted-style mosaic details, and a bespoke pergola, the garden now provides the perfect setting for relaxing, entertaining, and enjoying the outdoors.

Overview
Our clients wanted to bring the atmosphere of their favourite Greek holidays into their own back garden. The existing space lacked character and felt disconnected from the property, with little structure or visual interest.
Drawing inspiration from the whitewashed tavernas, rustic terraces, and sun-soaked courtyards found throughout the Greek islands, we developed a design that balanced authenticity with practicality. The result is a welcoming outdoor living space filled with texture, warmth, and Mediterranean charm.
Natural materials played a key role throughout the project. Terracotta-inspired finishes, decorative mosaic features, carefully selected planting, and locally sourced stone were combined to create a garden that feels both timeless and established.
The brief
The client approached Garden Concept Creations with a clear vision: they wanted a garden that instantly transported them back to the Greek islands whenever they stepped outside.
The space needed to feel relaxed and informal while remaining practical for entertaining family and friends. They wanted distinct areas for dining and socialising, along with planting that would reinforce the Mediterranean aesthetic without requiring excessive maintenance.
A bespoke pergola, traditional-style patio area, and authentic material palette were all high on the wish list. The challenge was to create a cohesive design that captured the essence of a Greek taverna while working within the proportions of a modern UK garden.
What we delivered
Garden design
The project began with a comprehensive garden design package that established the overall layout, material selections, and planting strategy. We carefully considered sightlines, movement through the space, and how each area would be used throughout the year.
The design focused on creating a series of connected zones, ensuring the garden felt larger, more inviting, and visually balanced from every angle.
Landscaping
Our landscaping team completely reworked the existing garden structure, introducing new levels, stone features, and carefully shaped planting beds.
A feature rockery became a focal point within the design, helping to recreate the rugged natural landscapes often seen throughout coastal Greece.
The combination of stone, gravel, and Mediterranean planting adds depth and texture throughout the garden.
Planting
The planting scheme was carefully curated to reflect the character of Mediterranean landscapes while remaining suitable for the UK climate.
Olive trees were introduced as statement features, supported by a selection of drought-tolerant grasses, lavender, and architectural shrubs.
The planting softens the hard landscaping and creates a relaxed, established atmosphere that improves with each growing season.
Pergola build
A bespoke timber pergola was constructed to create a dedicated outdoor dining area inspired by traditional Greek taverna terraces.
Positioned to frame views across the garden, the structure provides welcome shade during warmer months while creating a strong architectural feature that anchors the space.
